Canadian water solutions firm offers technology to Cebu LGUs

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

CEBU, Philippines - A Canadian sewage and water solutions technology has offered its technology to the Local Government Units (LGUs) in Cebu to help the latter avail of the top-of-the-line infrastructure at a lesser cost.

The Ontario-based Clear Ford Industries Inc., is now starting to negotiate with several LGUs in Metro Cebu, starting with the Mandaue City and Cebu City local governments to offer its technology in sourcing water, and effective sewage collection system.

In an interview with Jill Lauren Hass, vice president for Engineering and chief technical officer (CTO) of Clear Ford Industries, she said that the company is now reaching out to developing cities not only in the Philippines but also in other parts of the world, to apply the Canadian water and sewage technology.

Hass, together with officers from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines (CanCham) was in Cebu recently to start negotiations with LGUs, for the application of the water and sewage solutions.

She noticed that most of the cities in the Philippines, or Cebu City and Mandaue City in particular are still using “out-dated” technology for water sourcing and sewage system, which will incur large investment from the government’s coffer but offers low productivity result.

The new technology on the other hand, which the company is offering could cut the cost of water supply sourcing for the cities, as well as apply the right technology to have a good sewage system, thereby avoiding flooding, and other untoward incidents brought about by ineffective garbage collection or sewage system.

She further noticed that the urban cities in the Philippines, have yet to apply world-standard system, and this is needed in order to compete.

Hopefully, Hass said the company can start with a pilot project in Metro Cebu, and then offer the same technology to other cities around the country.

Clear Ford Industries Inc., is a 20-year old company established in Ontario, Canada, and now offering solutions to other countries like India, China, among others.

With low capital infusion, Hass said the technology is best applied in localities with limited budget for important infrastructure solutions.

Most importantly, this technology is best for water-scarce areas, just like Metro Cebu.

At this point, Clear Ford is still trying to negotiate initially with the two major cities in Metro Cebu—Cebu City and Mandaue City.

Hass is confident that with the pro-active stance of these two cities to become world-class players, and legitimate urban areas, local executives will be able to see the huge benefits that the technology will bring to the local economy.

She mentioned that Cebu, with its construction boom, and a flat City located in an island, should apply a serious stance in terms of water and sewage infrastructure, otherwise, the city may suffer from “urban decay’ if not given the proper solution this early. (FREEMAN)

Technology puts twist on old game

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Chris Michlewicz

Scavenger hunts will never be the same.

Technology has put its new-age twist on many classic games. Solitaire, for example, is a game rarely played with cards anymore. The Japanese number puzzle, Sudoku, has also been digitized. In much the same manner, geocaching is a fast-growing phenomenon that uses global positioning to guide treasure hunters toward the proverbial “X” in the sand.

Two modern-day explorer-hobbyists visited Acres Green Elementary School’s Rabbit Ears Radio Club April 12 to show the group of students how wireless technology can be used to track down items hidden in public places. Dan and Pam Scott, who created their own two-person team, search for “caches” that come in the form of hollowed-out bolts and sticks and fake rocks. Caches are hidden by other explorers, and the idea is to find the items, write your name on a log sheet within the cache, and leave a small treasure of equal or greater value. They include dollar-store games and messages. The Scott’s, known in the geocaching world as the Cache Venturers, have found 1,100 concealed caches. Some more serious geocachers have found as many as 32,500 caches.

The kids at Acres Green got their chance to feel the thrill of the hunt on school grounds. The Scott’s, who teach geocaching classes at Cheyenne Mountain State Park and other state parks, hid caches and gave each student a GPS unit that is accurate up to 15 feet. The caches are listed on a public website with location coordinates. Sometimes they are in plain sight, other times they are hidden in tree trunks or under rocks. Adventurers log their success, or lack their of, on the site.

Before they set out on the school endeavor, Dan Scott, a self-proclaimed “techno nerd,” used flashlights and a basketball to demonstrate to the club how intersecting satellite signals triangulate to send a signal to GPS units, iPhones and Blackberrys. The club, led by amateur radio enthusiast Paul Veal, of Lone Tree, learns about how wireless technology works and affects their everyday life. They have trained in worldwide communications, learning about scanners, satellite communications and even medical wireless technology, including a lesson on how the latest glucose meters “talk” to insulin pumps.

Geocaching was launched 11 years ago when the federal government turned off the selective availability for satellites orbiting the Earth, improving accuracy and opening a new world to a fresh class of adventurers. The game has taken on a life of its own and could be compared to a high-tech version of the hit television show the Amazing Race. Sometimes one cache will lead explorers to a next, and then another.

The Scott’s said they are not into urban caching, but rather prefer to hike to their destinations off the beaten path. After all, the best part of geocaching is the adventure in getting there. They even do geocaching when they travel and have tallied caches in 46 states. They have plans to attend a convention this year in England that is dedicated to the sophisticated hobby.

As he watches the kids excitedly scour for the next cache, Veal, the Rabbit Ears Radio Club leader, recalls being fascinated by shortwave radios as a child. He listened to Radio Moscow, Radio Havana and Radio America, hearing the same news stories in different languages. He even met his wife, a Douglas County School District foreign language teacher, on HAM radio while she was living in France.

Veal has passed his passion for wireless technology to his children, particularly Anna, an Acres Green Elementary student who has earned a good share of respect in the HAM radio world. She has earned national recognition and has her own call sign (W0ANT), just as her father does (N0aH). The other kids, wise beyond their years in how technology works, get a big kick out of learning about wireless communications.

“The kids love this,” Veal said. “You’re walking by [hidden caches] the whole time and have no idea it’s there.”

Caches are, in fact, hidden throughout many neighborhoods, cities and state parks throughout the country. An estimated 5 million people consider geocaching a hobby. Pam Scott is an avid geocacher, but admits she has little idea of how the technology actually works. She is happy chalking it up to “magic.” She half-jokingly informs the club that people have made a game of using billion-dollar government technology and equipment to “find useless trinkets in the woods.” It is purely for sport, but there are many Coloradans who are learning about how much fun they can have while telling satellites to talk to each other and pinpoint a specific location on the earth’s surface.

Riverbed Technology Is Still a Rule Breaker

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Cloud computing is still The Next Big Thing. How do I know? Customers can’t stop buying Riverbed Technology’s (Nasdaq: RVBD  ) deduplication appliances.

Not sure what deduplication means? Think of it as packing a suitcase with only the essentials. In a similar fashion, Riverbed’s Steelhead products combine hardware and software that strip needless 1s and 0s from data packets as they travel over a network. Lighter data moves faster.

Customers still like that pitch. Product revenue ballooned 50% in the first quarter while total revenue soared 45%. Gross margin improved a percentage point year-over-year, to 76.2%, and returns on capital more than doubled over the same period.

Overall, Riverbed reported $163.6 million in Q1 revenue and $0.20 in per-share earnings. Both results beat expectations, which analysts revised last week to $0.19 per-share profit on $161.9 million in revenue.

You’d think that would be enough to lift the stock during today’s bullish action. Not so. Shares of Riverbed are down more than 2% even as peers Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO  ) and F5 Networks (Nasdaq: FFIV  ) rally.

Guidance may be the issue. In last night’s conference call with analysts, Chief Financial Officer Randy Gottfried told investors to expect $171 million to $173 million in second quarter revenue and $0.21 in adjusted per share, about in line with what Wall Street was already expecting. Investors were apparently hoping for better. Dumb.

All signs point to Riverbed filling a massive need (i.e., faster data delivery over private and public networks) at a very attractive price point. In this sense, today’s sellers are focusing on the trunks of the Redwoods in a Very Big Forest. Buy before they look up to see what they’re missing.

Asia Markets: Technology, resource stocks buoy Asia

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

By V. Phani Kumar, MarketWatch , Shri Navaratnam and Leslie Shaffer

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Most Asian markets posted solid gains after a string of recent losses on Wednesday, with technology shares buoyed by strong U.S. earnings reports from Intel Corp. and resource stocks climbing as commodity prices pulled ahead.

Economic data showing an improvement in U.S. housing starts and Tuesday’s recovery on Wall Street and in European markets also helped encourage the advance, easing worries after Standard & Poor’s downgrade of its outlook on U.S. credit ratings on Monday rattled markets.

“There is some respite in the recent risk-averse trading on the back of gains in global share prices,” said Tomohiro Nishida, a senior dealer at Chuo Mitsui Trust and Banking. “Following Intel’s solid earnings outcome, expectations are rising for higher share prices.”

Yahoo earnings fall as firm hits technology delays – BBC News

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

20 April 2011 Last updated at 02:45 ET

Yahoo has said that a partnership with Microsoft is facing delays as it awaits improvements in technology.

The internet company, which has also announced a 28% fall in profits, is using Microsoft’s search technology in a bid to improve advertising revenue.

But Yahoo said the system was not yet paying off and that a further roll-out was on hold while changes were made.

Meanwhile, Yahoo made profits of $223m (£137m) for the first three months of 2011, down from $310m last year.

The quarterly earnings figure was ahead of analysts’ forecasts and sent Yahoo’s share price 3.5% higher in after-hours trading on Wall Street.

‘On schedule’

The mixed progress report from Yahoo comes two years into chief executive Carol Bartz’s attempts to revive growth at the company.

She told reporters that revenue would not rise to levels that Yahoo experienced before it struck the deal with Microsoft until the end of the year.

Her previous forecast was that revenues would pick up mid-2011.

Yahoo said it was continuing to make progress on efforts to expand into the fast-growing mobile internet market, and to increase the amount of video advertising on the site.

Net revenue, which excludes fees paid to partner websites, was $1.06bn in the first quarter, just higher than the $1.05bn average of analyst expectations but down 6% from the $1.13bn recorded a year earlier.

Ms Bartz said: “Our turnaround is proceeding on schedule, and we are very confident Yahoo is heading in the right direction.”

Steve Weinstein, analyst at Pacific Crest Securities, said there were clear signs of improvements at Yahoo.

“The growth in their display business, when you peel everything back, continues to look good,” he said.
